Sounds a bit like Oscar Wilde's quote (which I'm paraphrasing as I can't remember it exactly) about why bother to write novels when there are so many great ones already around to read. I think his general point was to be ironic as he was a published author at the time and also to deflect to focus away from the author as some kind of revered personage far above mere mortals.
