No, it's that I will make an absolute fool out of myself while coming out of general anesthesia. I can handle being ridiculous in front of a whole slew of nurses and doctors but the thought of saying something really embarrassing in front of my dad and not even remembering it? Mortifying.
Solution? Writing a note to myself on my hand in permanent marker. Here's what I was thinking:
Dear Caley,
You can talk about:
"Mad Men," Mexican food (but NOT TEQUILA) and your cat.
That is all. Nothing else.
If you can't make conversation about these subjects, do not talk at all.
Love, Caley

OH - i really hope someone brings a videocamera.
You are not the first person to put in that request. I'll see what I can do...
The problem with that note is the inevitable question: "So, why can't you talk about tequila?"
My problem with surgery is not that I get ridiculous; I generally wake up very quickly. But given the mandatory fast and the time spent unconscious, I usually haven't eaten for upwards of 18 hours by that point. Let's just say I'm not exactly pleasant when I'm that hungry... The last time I had surgery is also the last time I got a speeding ticket.
Oh, I get my love of tequila from my dad so hopefully he'll respect my silence on the subject.
Good point...I'll pack a snack. And why were you driving yourself home after surgery?!?
Ha ha! When I had my c-section, some delisional part of my brain thought it was appropriate to chat it up with the doctors and surgery staff while they were slicing me open. I wish I had thought of the permanent marker idea!
Driving myself home was one of those things that made sense at the time due to 1) No family in town and 2) It was summer and the only good friend who was around didn't have a drivers license. Not one of the better decisions in retrospect, but at least it was just a nose job so I wasn't hopped up on painkillers.
Next time? Call me. Also, we're already discussing Thanksgiving plans b/c my sister and her little fam are coming to town and Mom wanted me to make sure you know you're invited. Mark your calendar!
Duly noted. On both counts.
